Santa Clara blackware avanyu serpent pot by Celes Tafoya. Polished black surface deeply carved with traditional Awanyu design wrapped around the body. 3.25 inches diameter, 3 inches high. Pencil signes “Celes, Sta. Clara Pueblo”. Celes Tafoya (born in 1932) learned the ancient art from her mother, Legoria Tafoya, and passed it on to her daughter, Evelyn Aguilar. Among Celes’ close aunts were Pablita Velarde and Jane Baca. Celes, Legoria and Evelyn earned many awards at the Eight Northern Pueblos Arts & Crafts Show and at Santa Fe Indian Market. They made a lot of blackware, mostly bowls, small jars and figurines. Their designs were usually carved with rounded edges and they carved a lot of avanyu designs. Avanyu or Awanyu is a Tewa deity, the guardian of water. Represented as a horned or plumed serpent with curves suggestive of flowing water or the zig-zag of lightning, Awanyu appears on the walls of caves located high above canyon rivers in New Mexico and Arizona. Avanyu may be related to the feathered serpent of Mesoamerica–Quetzalcoatl and related deities. Avanyu is a frequent motif on Native American pottery of the Southwestern United States. Awanyu is represented as a plumed, or horned serpent, who guards waterways and is a harbinger of storms; a protector of the Pueblo people. The earliest representations of Avanyu are from 1000 AD. These were found on Mimbres pottery, a precursor to Pueblo pottery. In the Mogollon and Casa Grande districts images of Avanyu appear between 1200 and 1450 AD. Avanyu appears in Tewa and Tiwa speaking peoples areas around 1350 AD. Polished / burnished blackware – A technique is which polished or burnished areas of the pottery become glossy during firing, and unpolished areas become matt black, creating a delightful contrast. After AD 600, a type of polished blackware was produced in the area around south-central New Mexico that was made from brownware clay body with highly polished, iridescent black interiors. This type of pottery was continued to be made until approximately AD 1400. Archaeologists have determined that the blackened interiors were produced by reduction-firing (reducing the oxygen during the firing process)—this transformed the hematite in clay into black magnetite. The same technique was deployed by Tewa potters of the modern era at San Ildefonso Pueblo and Santa Clara Pueblo. – Wikipedia
