eBay DESCRIPTION: RARE COLLECTIBLE Ralph Aragon Native American Art Hand-Painted Gourd Vessel (lightweight gourd – NOT ceramic pottery) Genuine Authentic Original New Mexico Rose or Pink or Mauve ( subtle colors ) Natural stone decorative pieces combined with strips of soft leather MAKERS MARK: Signed RALPH ARAGON on the bottom with his KIVA Step symbol SIZE: Approximately 9″ at widest diameter and 9″ tall (not including the leather hanging handle) CONDITION: Good vintage condition – no cracks. NOTE – There are a couple of small areas on bottom that may be some slight wear / paint rubbed off, or may have been original to the piece (the last two photos show this). FROM THE INTERNET: Ralph Aragon is a full blooded Native American Indian. He was born into the San Felipe Pueblo and married into the Zia Pueblo, where he has lived for the past twenty years. As long as he can remember, Ralph has had the desire to create his own unique style of art. With traditional upbringing instilled in Ralph, he has learned to respect the beauty of nature which is evident in his animal motifs and earth tone palettes, which are abundantly used in his art. Over the years, Ralph has experimented with his own unique style of painting. He combines contemporary painting techniques with traditional Zia pottery designs, in order to obtain the rock art images and patterns that are associated with social and spiritual themes. Ralph is a strong believer in continuing the traditional ways of his people. Ralph studied at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico., In addition, his own quest for a unique way to express his creativity has led him successfully to hand paint shields, pottery, and gourds. Because of this, he has created “something different” for us to enjoy and images that “help preserve his culture and heritage”. He specializes in hand painting handmade pottery using acrylic paints. He signs his pottery as: R. Aragon, incorporated with a Kiva step style, which is a celebration of Pueblo life and the festivities of harvest time. Ralph is related to Dora Tse’Pe. FROM WIKIPEDIA: Ralph Aragon (born 1944) is a San Felipe Pueblo painter and ceramic artist. Aragon married into and lives at Zia Pueblo. He is particularly known for his painted coil-built pottery, with combines soft and bold colors paired with Pueblo customary pottery symbols and textured imagery from petroglyphs. Early life and education Aragon was born at San Felipe Pueblo and later married into the Zia Pueblo. He was educated at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Art career Aragon has found success as an easel painter, a muralist, and later as a painter of pottery and gourds. Aragon’s work has been exhibited at the United States Department of the Interior’s Second Annual Invitational Exhibition of American Indian Paintings (1965) and in the “Young American Indian Artists” exhibition (1965–66) at Riverside Museum, New York, New York. Aragon painted a mural of two buckskin horses — one white and the other yellow — on the facade of the Nuestra Señora de la Asunción church in Zia Pueblo.
