We are offering a very large group of items relating to William Bynner Campbell, Senior Partner of Price, Waterhouse & Co., who resided in Great Neck, Long Island, New York. There are three family scrapbooks (12 1/4 x 14 1/2) filled with hundreds of letters from 1926 through 1936; dozens of letters and telegrams from Price Waterhouse offices in the U. S. and abroad, and from some other companies, after the death of William Campbell on June 22, 1934, offering condolences to the family; a June 22, 1934 New York Sun newspaper article announcing his death with a tribute to his life and accomplishments; and a 7 x 9 photograph of Campbell in a 10 1/4 x 14 1/4 folder. The scrapbooks have beautifully embossed covers of an ancient Viking ship with a dragon figurehead, and a Viking man onboard – 1.) The first scrapbook has letters, dated from the late 1920s to the mid-1930s, from Billy and Hugh, the sons of William and his wife Jessie, when they were away at school, some to Dad but most which are in the 1930s are to their mother, as their father was seriously ill during that time. In a letter from Billy dated March 1933, he writes, “How’s Dad now, has he sat up yet? How’s your money, with all the bank business going on? The men down here are very worried. They seem to think the banks won’t open on Tuesday. DON’T PAY ANY BILLS IN CASH!! This country sure is in a messy condition. Does Dad know what’s going on? Have you any money in the National City Bank?” In a letter from Hugh, also dated March 1933, he writes “Have you got enough cash? How does everybody buy food and other stuff now? Did you see in the paper that the Detroit banks have been closed for a month?” 2.) In the second scrapbook, most of the letters are from granddaddy William Campbell in Coal City, Illinois to William & Jessie’s boys, David, Billie & Hugh. Four letters, written in April & May 1933, are to his daughter-in-law Jessie – he informs her that her Bankers Trust Co. check for $4,000 came to him by Special Delivery, and that the bank is under conservatorship while the examination is being made by Comptroller experts. “They proposed that the bank’s capital could be increased by $15,000 if the depositors would waive 25% of their deposits” [meaning they would get only 75% of the money they had on deposit]. He will hold Jessie’s check before depositing it until things settle down. He writes that at the time only merchants could draw on checks in order to keep their businesses running. In his second letter he says the Chief National Bank Examiner did not agree with the depositors’ waiver of 25% but said 30% is what it needs to be. In another letter he said the Washington authorities agreed to increase their bank’s capital to $40,000. In his last letter, he states that after much telephoning, telegraphing and journeying [traveling in person], their bank had resumed business. 3.) The last scrapbook has letters from Price, Waterhouse and other companies that did business with William B. Campbell with get-well wishes right after his operation in March 1933, and personal letters to William and Jessie. There are also several letters (loosely placed in the scrapbook, not pasted) from “Grandaddy” Campbell – one in 1924 to his daughter-in-law Jessie regarding the re-investment of her funds derived from the sale of the Old Ben Coal Corporation bonds…… There are many letters to his grandsons, Hugh, Billy and David – one dated November 4, 1932, about the Presidential election campaign, and one dated November 14, 1932, “after the election votes were counted, with an overwhelming Democratic victory” [election of Franklin D. Roosevelt]. Campbell attempts to interest his grandsons in politics – “Some folks think that when victors come into power, their doings and un-doings may have monumental consequences. Whatever they do will be worth studying, and it may be worthwhile for you, who will all be voters in a few years, to acquire an interest in their different moves”. **NOTE** – There are hundreds of letters in this collection, and we were only able to read a small fraction of them – way too many for us to write about. Letters of Condolence – some hand-written, most typed, from Goldman Sachs & Co.; Lehman Brothers; the New York Stock Exhange; International Telephone & Telegraph Corporation; different banks; and various other companies. One letter is from Frank Altschul, a General American Inventors Company Executive and Senior Partner at Lazard Freres, a San Francisco bank. In the 1920s, he was awarded the Legion of Honor Medal by the government of France after giving successful advice on how to stabilize the French franc. During the Great Depression in the 1930s, he was a member of the committee set up to govern the New York Stock Exchange.
