ANTIQUE MINT AMERICANA WHISKEY BACK BAR PAUL JONES WHISKEY ENAMELED PINCH BOTTLE ANTIQUE MINT AMERICANA BACK BAR PAUL JONES WHISKEY ENAMELED PINCH BOTTLE 1890’s ANTIQUE MINT AMERICANA WHISKEY BACK BAR PAUL JONES WHISKEY MULTICOLORED ENAMELED PINCH BOTTLE ~ CIRCA 1890’s This is a scarce Antique American advertising “Pinch” style decanter Whiskey back bar bottle with white enamel Brand lettering and a multi-colored enamel label with senior citizen resembling a farmer character, circa late 1890s. A “Pinch” bottle is much scarcer and smaller than the typically larger decanter style bottles or the tall, standard style whisky bottles used to “call out” your whiskey brand in a saloon, gambling halls and bar rooms. They are called Pinch bottles as the bottle has 2 indentations in the back side of the glass so that the pourer can easily pinch the small bottle with their fingers when pouring a shot of whiskey. This fancy and desirable Pinch back bar decanter style bottle was used so that Whiskey patrons could “call up” their favorite brand of Whiskey, i.e., PAUL JONES WHISKEY. This style of pinch bottles came in a variety of sizes and labels and is about 6 3/8″ tall (8″ with stopper in) and about 3 3/4″ from front to back. The glass is hand blown into a mold, and one can see the mold mark at the base of the neck, in the neck glass, and also the bottom. The script style thick 3-dimensional white enamel lettering is hand stenciled onto the glass. The lettering reads, “PAUL JONES” below the multi-colored enamel panel with a character used to portray the imbiber of the whiskey, undoubtedly a tongue and cheek depiction as this would have been a higher priced shot vs. the bar brand. This lettering and enamel label can easily be chipped or damaged over time. Many bottles with this style of lettering have some wear or have lettering worn off; but the lettering and label on this one is in mint condition. There is a tiny factory blemish of dot of glass with dark color on the top of the letter ‘e’ in Jones. I am unsure how the front panel is created. It appears a template was used to paint the white enamel background of the character, then a stencil was painted on with the label outline, and finally, hand colored with flesh, orange, brown and yellow coloring, the 3-D script letters applied and perhaps the bottle was heated to set and dry the enamel. Almost all these old bottles have deposits on the inside the bottle; however, this pinch bottle is in mint condition, with the inside glass appearing clear and unused. This is the best example of this pinch bottle I have ever seen, in untouched, as found condition. The hand-blown glass mushroom stopper has an etched male bottom part with a few grind marks to the top frosted edge to fit the top to the bottle, a gold applied border on top, and the top fits perfectly into the decanter top. Note it is Impossible to photograph a curved reflective item in any light. I took dozens of images with a variety of backgrounds and lighting conditions to try to eliminate glare, but all the images have some reflections. The result is what you see in the listing images. Paul Jones Whiskey was named after a successful businessman and entrepreneur who was born in 1830 in Wales. He moved to America in 1848 and started his own distillery in Louisville, Kentucky in 1865. The brand was eventually sold to the Frankfort Distilling Company in 1902. This is a connoisseur quality piece of Americana in mint condition. This eye-appealing piece would be suitable for any bar, back bar, Man Cave, Old West, Western Americana, saloon, gambling hall, decor piece, conversation piece; and could still be used today to hold your favorite Whiskey, wine, liquor, or other spirit. Provenance: purchased from a large collection of Whiskey bottles, decanters, etched glasses, et al., and was one of 2 mint pinch bottles in the collection.
