Highly Sought after Very Collectible 2007 polychrome seed pot Santa Clara Pueblo Pottery made by award-winning artist, Lois Gutierrez del la Cruz. Lois Gutierrez del la Cruz is one of the most highly respected artists in Santa Clara Pottery today. Lois Gutierrez del la Cruz is of Pojoaque and Santa Clara heritage and works with polychrome plates, jars and bowls.This 2007 pot is a perfectly shaped polychrome seed pot it is the perfect seedpot by Lois with superb detail and solid colors. A classic example of her work at its best. This seedpot measures 4.5 inches tall by 5 inches wide. Lois is the wife of Derek de la Cruz (who helps her with the outdoor firing and gathering the natural paints) and the daughter of Petra (Montoya) Gutierrez (Pojoaque) and Juan Isidro Gutierrez(Santa Clara). She is also the sibling of potters Godenrod (Gloria Garcia), Thelma Talachy and Minnie Vigil. She has won over 20 awards at the Santa Fe Indian Market since 1975 in a number of divisions and categories,including Best of Show and the Katherine & Miguel Otero Award for Creative Excellence. Lois has been published in many publications including Arizona Highways, American Indian Art Magazine, SWAIA Quarterly, New Mexico Magazine, Gregory Schaaf’s “Pueblo Indian Pottery: 750 Artist Biographies”; “Fourteen Families in Pueblo Pottery” by Dillingham; Lillian Peaster’s “Pueblo Pottery Families”; and Stephen Trimble’s “Talking With The Clay”. Lois Gutierrez’s work is widely collected for its very refined artwork and form utilizing beautiful graphics and rich, solid colors to create her fine pieces. A distinctive quality of her work is portraying various aspects of traditional Pueblo life including Pueblo dancers, everyday life scenes, human and animal interactions, and the occasional graphic statement pertaining to a Native American political perspectives. The Gutierrez family was one of the 14 families who settled in the pueblo in 1934. Lois Gutierrez is a descendant of that family, with roots from Santa Clara Pueblo. Lois Gutierrez married Derek de la Cruz. She comes from a family of talented potters—her mother, Petra, and her sisters, Goldenrod (Gloria Garcia) , Thelma Talachy, Lupita Gutierrez and Minnie Vigil all are recognized artisans. Lois and her husband work independently producing beautiful polychrome jars decorated in a multitude of design elements. They each make their own pottery and fire jointly. Santa Clara Indian PotterySanta Clara pueblo is located north of Santa Fe along the Rio Grande River and dates back to the 12th century. Santa Clara potters are known for their wonderful carved red ware and black ware as well as polychrome on red ware. Like Maria at San Ildefonso Margaret Tafoya at Santa Clara became widely known as one of the best pueblo potters in history. In addition to her incredible ability to mold large storage jars she mastered the use of a simple impressed bear paw motif that has become synonymous with Santa Clara pottery. Today Santa Clara produces a wide variety of forms and styles as evidenced by the overwhelming number of potters who participate in Santa Fe’s yearly Indian Market.Santa Clara Pueblo Pottery Artists’ Characteristic StyleLike San Ildefonso Pueblo pottery, Santa Clara pottery artists created black-on-black and red vessels. Some pieces exhibit the same matte over glossy finish developed by Maria and Julian Martinez. But, Santa Clara Pueblo pottery artists have developed their own trademark styles and designs that distinguish their art from their neighbors’.Santa Clara Pueblo is a census-designated place in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 980 at the 2000 census, although, approximately 3,800 reside on the reservation. Santa Clara Pueblo was established about 1550.The Santa Clara pueblo currently has the largest number of active potters of the pueblo pottery producers. The pueblo is famous for the carved and/or polished blackware and redware. Santa Clara and San Ildefonso pueblos are adjacent and their pottery techniques have been shared and influenced by the other. Margaret Tafoya and her mother, SaraFina Tafoya, are considered the matriarchs of Santa Clara pottery. They developed the carved pottery technique in the 1920’s. Helen Shupla was another important innovator who created the melon bowl from an earlier historic version. Her melon bowls are distinctive because she pushed the ribs from the inside out instead of carving them on the outside.Black-on-black and redware is still popular as well as polychrome designs. Many potters favor highly polished surfaces and frequently use the traditional bear paw imprint. The avanyu, Tewa for water serpent, is a favorite motif. The double-spouted wedding vase is also a popular vessel. Recently several potters are creating sgraffito pottery, finely detailed geometrics and plant and animal forms on vessels. The potters use multiple colors of clay slips to emphasize areas of decorations. Several potters also create clay figures, another traditional art form of the pueblo.Some of the most innovative potters are at Santa Clara creating very non-traditional vessels, including Joseph Lonewolf, Grace Medicine Flower, Nathan Youngblood, Lucy Year Flower, Nancy Youngblood Lugo, Jody Folwell, Autumn Bortz and Tammy Garcia. A few of the many other highly collectible potters are LuAnn Tafoya, Tina and Greg Garcia, Corn Moquino, Virginia Ebelacker, Christina Naranjo, Toni Roller, Shirley Tafoya, Mary Archuleta, Mary Cain, Belen Tapia, and Angela Baca.
